While not shying away from the variety and grittiness of the act of giving birth, the ad's creators have, for obvious reasons, kept the spot prime-time friendly. And that means delivering an onslaught of cuteness and life-affirming joy. There can be no faulting the selection of arrivals and slices of early life documented here—premature babies, long-awaited babies, healthy babies, special-needs babies, IVF, adoption, multilingual kids; they cover just about every possible base. The spot ends with a heartwarming line on screen: "Pampers believes every baby is a little miracle." Not a soul on the planet could argue with that. As a piece of brand building that plucks—nay, pounds—the heartstrings, this spot will go down as one of the greats. The only possible gripe is that all these babies would be just as miraculous if they were wearing Huggies instead of Pampers, or reusable cloth diapers, or indeed, nothing at all. New Dry Max Pampers Causing Rash, Burns, Sores, Boils?

Pampers new brand of Dry Max diapers causes rashes, burns, sores, and boils on their babies, some parents are alleging in a growing online backlash. But is it really Dry Max, or just typical diaper rash that the parents are incorrectly correlating with the new diaper?

One parent posts, "We were using Pampers diapers with the dry max and at 2 weeks old she developed a diaper rash that turned into horrible open sores."

Another, "my 2.5 year old experienced an inflamed reddness on his legs, bottom and genitals. I couldn't explain where it came from. I doused him with desitin for two days and it bled instead of clearing up. It didn't hit me til I read a post on facebook. Now I will switch him to another diaper."

And another, "I was in the store the other day and didnt pay any attention and picked up a box of Pampers just thinking they changed the packaging. My youngest will be 2 next week and has NEVER had a diaper rash. Night before last he woke up with a leaking diaper (no surprise, we go thru it every night) and when I went to change him, his bottom was blistered and bleeding."

To fix the rashes, parents say they have had success with using frequent rinsing, oatmeal baths, and Aveeno.

Reached for comment, P&G said:

At Pampers, nothing is more important to us than the health and well being of babies. That’s been our reason for being for over 40 years.

Whenever we make an improvement to our diaper - whether it was the introduction of adhesive tape followed by stretch many years ago up to the new Dry Max technology today - our overriding concern is that the product is safe. We have an entire division that is devoted to product safety, and we conducted extensive safety assessments including clinical tests before we introduced our new diaper.

Pampers with Dry Max is the most mom- and baby-tested diapers in our history. More than 20,000 babies from around the world involving more than 300,000 diaper changes were part of the development of Dry Max. This is one of Pampers’ most thoroughly researched and tested new products ever.

According to Dr. David Schonfeld, a member of the Pampers Parenting Network and Thelma and Jack Rubinstein Professor of Pediatrics, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, “I’ve reviewed the consumer and clinical data and feel comfortable that Pampers with Dry Max underwent rigorous safety testing and is a safe product. As a pediatrician, this is exactly the kind of testing I would hope to see in a diaper. Diaper rashes are usually caused by irritation from feces and urine - it’s called a diaper rash because it appears in the area that diapers are worn. Although a good diaper helps to protect the baby’s sensitive skin, some diaper rashes are still going to occur no matter how good the diaper is. The testing that Pampers conducted before the diapers were sold and the monitoring of complaints since it has been on the market do not show any evidence that Dry Max causes more diaper rashes than the product it replaced.”

Diaper rash is one of the most common ailments affecting babies and toddlers with many causes and symptoms of varying severity. In general, a healthy baby is expected to get a diaper rash roughly 3-4 times a year with some percent deemed severe - meaning the rash is deep red, with possible blisters and/or breaks in the skin. Some of these rashes can have appearance characteristics typically associated with burns. When you consider that there are about 10,000,000 babies in diapers in the US alone combined with the frequency of the rash, it makes sense that as hundreds of thousands of parents switch to Dry Max diapers, some many have children that coincidentally develop diaper rashes at the same time.

As background, our Dry Max diaper uses the same type of ingredients as our other diaper and in fact, many other disposable diapers on the market. The improvement is in the design and manufacture of the diaper, which allowed us to create a diaper that is 20% thinner than before and is our driest diaper ever as it helps lock in wetness.

For giving Anton 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep, I give it 5 stars. Lately, Anton's been soaking up his nappies, and sometimes we have to change 3 times during the night, because whenever his nappy got full, Anton always wakes up crying. And also we sometimes had a problem with leakages because he'd really be soaked. I suspect the discomfort always triggered nightmares in my poor baby. The problem all started when Pampers stopped selling All-Nights and replaced it with overpriced Pampers Active, which got super-soaked even sooner than the economy-priced Pampers Comfort. So we switched to Huggies Dry Comfort for nighttime. But with the amount of weewee Anton makes during the night, it's not enough. So we were forced to switch to Mamy Poko. At Php 16.00 a nappy (ka-ching-ka-ching, parang yung EQ ad), it's pricey but it's well worth the fitful sleep Anton gets. It has "Extra Speedy Absorbency to provide dryness till the next morning" because of its "Maxi Absorb Core" that incredibly makes the diaper feel dry to the touch even if it's already soaked. What's more, it has "Real Breathable Cover and Waistband" so you don't have to worry about diaper rashes. Studies say that there's a high incidence of ADHD among kids who had trouble sleeping while they were babies. For two nights now, Anton's been sleeping like the baby he truly is. And even better, I get to sleep more, too. =)

Huggies vs. Pampers Baby Diapers

I have no idea about diapers (even those of the said brands) in other places/countries and this post is safer assumed to be applicable only in the Philippines.

Being the two longest mainstream baby diaper brands in the local market, Huggies and Pampers have always been debated on. I believe I was a Pampers baby. Basically everyone back in the days were. It seemed to be the only brand of baby diapers. But with F and K, we’ve tried Prokids Newborn, Pampers Newborn, and Huggies Newborn which are all available in the country and can be bought from leading supermarkets and… we have chosen this

Huggies over Pampers

Of the three that we have already tried, Huggies is the most expensive. A pack of 24 Newborn-size diapers of Prokids is worth around PhP 185.oo. The same pieces and size of Pampers is worth PhP 200 while Huggies Newborn 24-pieces is priced at PhP 202.50 (prices based on SM Supermarkets as of 2011). However, Prokids is relatively harder to find in stores. Pampers and Huggies are more often seen on the shelves. The winning factor of Huggies is one of the most crucial criterion in choosing disposable diapers – absorption. Pampers (at least the ones distributed here in the Philippines) scores very badly at this! Pampers diapers are so thin! You’re better off with cloth diapers since you’d have to change it after 1 baby pee anyway. I’m actually very disappointed. They seem to be one of the cheaper baby diapers (as compared to Huggies and Mamy Poko) in line with other famous brands like Prokids and EQ Diapers but they cheat consumers off with the quality. Good thing I only bought 3 packs of Pampers just so we can try it out. We are definitely going back to and sticking to Huggies.

Again why Huggies wins over Pampers: It absorbs much better, it doesn’t leak that easily, it’s relatively not that expensive (Come on, a 2-peso difference), it’s available in most supermarkets, and the tape doesn’t fall off easily so it keeps its snug fit even if the baby moves a lot.

While other moms/consumers prefer Pampers, Drypers, Prokids, EQ, Mamy Poko (not in our budget, sorry), or other diapers for reasons of their own, ask me and no doubt I’ll recommend Huggies. Then again, things might change as the twins become older and we change diaper sizes.

Mamy Poko I think would be the most high end brand in the baby diaper market category in terms of display in the local retail supermarket setting. Over the years, I ‘ve used and tried probably every diaper brand in the market that I could think of without much success. I ended up with Mamy Poko since it was the only brand left that my kids weren’t allergic to and that the diaper didn’t tend to bunch up or tear up when full.

Mamy Poko also has the distinction of being a brand with limited distribution and low customer service levels. So, I tend to hoard Mamy Poko every time I can.

My favorite haunts Unimart and Cherry don’t really carry it. Mercury doesn’t carry it as well. I’m left with Makro and Puregold as my places to go to.

It is interesting to note that Makro’s pricing for this product is so horrendously expensive compared to that of Puregold. We even made the mistake of buying 4 packs which Makro absolutely refused to allow exchage for. They said the product wasn’t damaged so why return it. Well, I don’t know about you, but it seems that every single one of my friends is having a baby or getting pregnant these days, so babies are kind of on my mind!

To kick things off, I am sharing my top favorite games to play at Baby Showers – and no, I am not going to encourage you to eat mashed up chocolate bars out of diapers!

1.  What’s In the Bag? – Gather up some lunch bags and place small baby items in them.  Number the bags and secure them closed.  Have guests feel the bags and write down what baby item they think is in the bag.  The person that guesses the most right is the winner!  Give all of the items to the Mom-to-Be at the end of the shower!  Here is a list of ten items I put in bags for a recent shower I hosted.

5.  Diaper Pins – They take a certain bit of time to make, but aren’t they cute??  I’ve done this for several showers that I have hosted!  Simply fold white felt squares into a diaper shape and secure with a safety pin.  I used pink or blue puffy paint to add a little bow.  I also like to thread a piece of pink or blue yarn through the diaper so that it makes a little necklace for the guest to wear throughout the party.  No one knows until the end when they are all opened together that one of the diapers has a mini chocolate chip in it and whoever has the poopy diaper is the winner!

I am throwing a ‘Sprinkle’ for one of my friends in June and I will definitely be using one of these ideas!

When you think about the necessary equipment you need for your baby you immediately think of car seat, stroller and crib. But equally important is also the question of what basic baby clothes will you need for the first few weeks? And how many of each item do you need?

Whether you are buying baby boy clothes or baby girl clothes there is no specified number of each garment that is essential. It is important to have enough of the basic baby clothes for a day or two so that you don't have to be constantly worrying about having to do the laundry every day.

Newborn babies can go through a surprising number of clothes changes in the course of a day so garments that are easy to get on and off make a lot of sense. So which clothes does it make sense to have? Here is a list of articles that are practical for the newborn:

* Make sure you have at least 5-10 snapsuits, either plain ones for use underneath pants and tops or the fancier ones as outerwear when its warmer.

* Use baby one piece sleeper suits in the first few weeks during the day - you'll need 5-10 of these.

* For use during those night-time diaper changes, have 4-5 baby gowns because they make the job a lot easier.

* 5-10 bibs - although babies don't take solid food they do have a tendency to drool and spit up.

* Buy a large amount of burp cloths so that your clothes can last for more than just one burp session!

* Keep baby's feet warm with socks, no matter how well the home is heated. You'll need 5 pairs of those.

* Decide which type of hat matches the weather you're likely to experience and get two of them.

* Keep baby warm with one baby coat, choosing the one you want that matches the season and the weather in your part of the world.

* Make drying baby easier by having two or three hooded baby towels.

* Avoid the scratches that babies are so good at inflicting on themselves by having at least two pairs of cotton mittens.

Please bear in mind that every baby's needs and habits are different and as a result the list of newborn baby clothes above cannot be exact. In particular, the frequency with which you wish to change your baby's clothes will affect the numbers.

Even so, I suggest that you use the list as a general guide so that the task of diaper changing and baby dressing is simple as possible. You can then supplement it with any additional outfits that you want for those extra special occasions.

* It is a good idea when choosing clothes by age, such as 9 months or 12 months, to work out the time of year when your baby is old enough to wear them. It's no good buying summer clothes to fit a ten month old baby if it will be the middle of winter when they will fit!

* If you have ever struggled to get a wriggling or crying baby dressed you will be aware that choosing clothes with back openings or that go over the head is not a good idea. Front opening outfits with either poppers or velcro fastenings save you and your baby a lot of stress.

* Make sure you have enough: Food often dribbles on to your baby's clothes when you're feeding him and babies often spit up or be sick on their clothes. Whenever messy accidents happen, you'll need a fresh change of clothes ready for your baby to wear.

* It is always a good idea to check out the clearance rails in the stores first rather than paying regular prices. Most store have bargain rails, especially when they are swapping out seasonal clothes, and sometimes they discount them even more at the cash register. If you shop during sale time and on the clearance racks you can save a lot of money.

* Don't be too proud to accept hand me downs from family and friends. This can save you a lot of money and as babies from birth to about nine months do not wear their clothes out many will be nearly new. You may also find that some of the outfits haven't even been worn as often parents are given far more clothes than their baby needs.

* Make some cash from old clothes: Selling the clothes your baby has outgrown is a great way to earn a little extra money. There are many places where you can turn outgrown baby clothes into cash, for example eBay, garage sales, thrift stores and online. You might not make a lot of money and certainly not what you originally paid for them, still, you'll at least get some of your money back.

Natural Cough Remedies For Babies

When your baby comes down with a cough, you want to do whatever you can to make her more comfortable. Yet at the same time, you don't want to grab over the counter medication, since there are usually side effects and chemicals that you'd rather not expose babies to if it can be avoided. What's more, recent studies have shown that cough syrups are worthless and the sugar they contain may even prolong illness.

Thankfully there are quite a few natural remedies that you can try to calm your baby's cough. If your baby seems congested, take her in the bathroom and run a hot shower. The steam from the shower will help loosen that congestion in her lungs.

Putting your baby in a warm (not hot) bath can have the same effect. Make the bath even more effective by adding a few drops of eucalyptus, sage or thyme oil into the bath water. The vapours from these essential oils will help open baby's airways, allowing her to breath easier. The vapours from these oils will also sooth a sore throat.

If your baby's cough is caused by croup, sometimes the best course of action is to wrap her up warmly and take her out in the night air. The cold air sometimes calms the inflammation in the upper airways.

You can also use sage and thyme to make tea out of them. The warm herbal tea will help clear mucus out of your baby's lungs. Please check with your pediatrician to find out at what age you can start giving your baby these herbal teas.

Licorice tea is another great natural cough treatment. Licorice has antibacterial properties that will help you baby fight the bacteria that are causing the cough. It also soothes the throat and calms the respiratory tract; helping her get some much needed sleep. Make a cup of licorice tea and give it to your baby as warm as possible, of course without burning her.

Another very effective and gentle natural cough remedy for babies is an herbal rub. Start with 3 to 4 tablespoons of olive oil and add 2 drops of essential oils to the olive oil. Good oils to use are eucalyptus, sage, rosemary and peppermint oil. A mixture of eucalyptus and rosemary works really well at night, since the eucalyptus will calm your baby's cough and allow her to breath easier, while the rosemary helps calm her down and drift off to sleep.

Mix the olive oil and essential oils well, then apply the mixture to your baby's chest and back. If the baby is small, swaddle her in a soft blanket, otherwise keep her back and chest as covered as possible with a thicker, tight fitting shirt to build up body heat which will allow the essential oils to vaporize. As baby breathes in the fumes, breathing will get easier.

A humidifier is another great option when it comes to making your coughing baby more comfortable. Use a few of the same essential oils suggested above and run the humidifier in baby's bedroom.

Some Moms have found that breast milk will help soothe and heal a cough better than any other drink. If you're nursing and baby develops a cough, don't stop breastfeeding. Increase baby's feedings. Breast milk is not a dairy product and is the safest food for baby when he's sick.

Eczema in Babies - How to Treat Them

Very little of the literature for new mothers addresses eczema in babies. After all, eczema doesn't fit in with the picture of the dewey, glowing baby all new parents imagine. Eczema in babies is fairly common though, and not too difficult to understand and treat.

Eczema is dry, scaly, itchy skin that appears irritated. Although not contagious, eczema can become infected if scratched. Infants can develop eczema almost anywhere, but behind the knees and elbows, and on the face, neck and belly are the most common sites. Eczema in infants tends to become crusty and weepy.

Treating your baby's eczema can be relatively simple. Since eczema tends to rob the affected skin of moisture, keeping the skin adequately moisturized is the most important aspect of treatment. Limiting baths to two to three a week helps to keep the skin moist, and using a very mild soap like Aveeno, Dove or Cetaphil is important. Avoid anything with perfumes or dyes. Pat the skin dry, never rub, and immediately apply a thick moisturizer. Aquaphor and Eucerin are often recommended, but any mild, unscented, thick lotion will work.

Many doctors recommend that lotions be applied four or five times daily to help keep the skin moist.

If the skin is irritated and red, a mild topical steroid like 1% hydrocortisone cream may be prescribed by your doctor to reduce inflammation. Many doctors and parents advocate putting socks or mittens over a baby's hands to keep them from scratching affected skin.

Eczema should be carefully monitored for signs of infection. Any open, weeping or warm areas should be immediately treated, and your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to keep the infection under control.

Although often very frightening for new parents, eczema in babies can be managed with careful monitoring and constant moisturizing. Fortunately, many babies grow out of eczema by age five with no long lasting effects.
